Stanley Feldman - CEO
If you think the owner's son gets all the breaks, ask Stanley Feldman about working for his dad. "There was no favoritism shown when I started working for my dad," he says. Stan got his start at the bottom but credits his start for the appreciation he has for flooring installers. "Working in installation taught me how to sell jobs. It gave me the confidence I needed to get in front of customers and to be aggressive because I knew what our capabilities were."
After high school, Stan attended Indiana University with the idea of going into business for himself one day. He got his opportunity sooner than he thought. His father's health problems meant that help was needed right away. Stanley took over Best Carpet and Tile in 1978 as the manager, warehouse manager, service manager, and sales manager. "I always wondered what my dad was doing at work all the time. We hardly ever saw him and I soon found out why."
Soon after taking over, Stan began to hire a staff to help him run the business, enabling him to go out and sell. He started getting contracts from some of the largest homebuilders in Indianapolis. "There is no way I could have done it without the people who worked for me. Many of them are still here today and their legacy with this company is what has made us continue to grow and be successful."
Stan's business philosophy is about trusting the people you hire to accomplish the goals you have. "Employees need to learn from mistakes. It makes them and your company better."
His plans for the future of Best Flooring are mainly focused on marketing. In the next five years, he would like to open a retail establishment along with entering into a new marketplace. "With our current foundation of management and staff we are poised to grow. The future is unlimited." After 25 years, he still feels Best Flooring is at the beginning of its very bright future. |
