What You Need to Know When Getting Replacement Windows

What You Need to Know When Getting Replacement Windows

What You Need to Know When Getting Replacement Windows

Window replacement is sometimes necessary after purchasing an older house to reside in or for resale. This involves taking down the aged weatherworn windows and installing new ones. This simple adjustment may be enough to completely uplift the look your new property. In addition, getting replacement windows can boost the resale value of your house. For the installation to proceed seamlessly, you need to familiarize yourself with various aspects of the process. As the homeowner, this will allow you to be more involved and will yield better outcomes. The following four steps must be carried out prior to the day of installation.

1. Selection and measurement

The first step is to contact a local window supplier. He or she will then ask you for details regarding the type of windows you wish to install, the material of the frame, the glazing options, the style, how many windows are to be installed, and your approximate budget. The sales representative will then organize for a contractor to make a visit to your house and obtain the required measurements. At the end of the visit, the sales representative will give you a comprehensive breakdown of the total estimated cost of installation. Your job is to go through this carefully and confirm whether all the numbers add up. Always confirm the warranty period and make note of this for future reference.

2. Getting window permits if necessary

Before getting replacement windows, you need to enquire from the local building and construction department whether or not a permit will be required. A permit is oftentimes necessary if you intend to make modifications to the existing window opening. You may also need one if you reside in hurricane-prone states, such as Florida or Louisiana. In such areas, building codes require that all windows be impact resistant.

3. Scheduling the installation

The total time required for installation will depend on the number of windows you intend to replace. On average, this may take about two to three days. If certain challenges arise, such as unfavorable weather,  the process is certain to take a longer time. It is best to consider all this when planning your days off work.

4. Preparing your house for the installation

Prepping your house beforehand will save you time and money. The more time the crew spends in your house, the higher the costs incurred. You can prepare the house yourself by ensuring the following tasks are done in advance.

-Move furniture, flower pots, lamps, toys or any other obstacles from your windows. This will allow easy access for the personnel. The windows should be accessible from both inside and outside. Any vines obstructing access from the outside should be cleared.

-Take down the curtains and blinds beforehand. Failure to do so will slow down the entire process and leave the crew frustrated.

-Create some space in your house for the crew to set up their equipment. This will allow them to access their tools easily.

-Cover your floors and furniture and move your carpets away to protect them caulk and paint stains.

-Have your pets or children stay in a separate location a distance away to prevent any accidents and injuries from occurring. This will also help the crew to carry out their work undistracted.

Unforeseen Challenges During Installation

When getting replacement windows, you must always plan for the unexpected. Bad weather can stall the installation process and leave your interiors vulnerable to the elements. To minimize the chances of this happening, ensure that only one window is taken down at a time and replaced immediately. If the crew is unable to install the new window in time, they can nail down some wooden boards to cover up the area temporarily.

Ask Questions If Unsure of Anything

Do not shy away from asking the crew any questions you may have. As much as they may be experienced in their job, it is your responsibility as a homeowner to ensure that the work done is up to standard.

On the first day of installation, give the crew a brief tour of your home and identify the windows to be replaced. This is also the best time to make any inquiries you may have regarding the process. If any concerns arise during installation, the contractor should be available to address them.

Thanks for helping me understand that it will save us more money if we let prepare the house before the experts come since the shorter they stay, the lesser the charge. I will share this with my best friend because I heard that they need their windows to be replaced already due to the moisture that they have noticed due to the gaps. Since they are on a budget, this will help her avoid having a large bill in the end.

I love that you suggested keeping the animals away from any project to prevent any injuries during the replacement. This will be very useful for us because we have three active dogs in our house, and we just need to get our windows replaced after it has been damaged by the hurricane lately. Thanks a lot for the tips on how to prepare for this project.

It really helped when you said that preparing the house will save us money since the more time the professionals stay, the price will increase as well. I will definitely keep that in mind since I also have a limited budget. We just need to have the windows replaced because I noticed that there are gaps in them already when I cleaned them a day ago.

I want to make sure that I get the right replacement windows. It makes sense that I might need to get a professional to help with this! I don’t even know how to properly measure the size of my windows, after all.

I noticed a draft coming from my windows, and I’m not sure what to do about it. It makes sense that I would want to get them replaced! I’ll be sure to talk to a professional to help me out with this. They would know how to go about getting window permits, after all.
